After 46 years of service at The Dow Chemical Company, L. C. "BUD" RUBENS retired in 1986. During his time at Dow, his applied work in foam technology produced commercial development of incredible magnitude.
He invented Etha-Foam polyethylene foam, and was a pioneer in organic blowing agents, which have been applied to almost all polymeric foam products, including Styrofoam, and Urethane foam.
Bud was also instrumental in the development of Styrene / Di-Vinyl Benzene Co-Polymer, leading to the first Low-Loss Die-Electric, weather-stable plastics for early radar technology.
He also helped to develop fiberglass reinforced unsaturated polyester resin for body armor.
A holder of 58 U.S. patents, Bud received the first Hubert H. Dow Gold Medal in 1979, and was named a Dow Research Fellow in 1982. That same year, the company named him "Inventor of the Year" for his work on composite foam structure.
A member of the Society of Plastics Engineers, Bud was honored with an "Outstanding Achievement Award" by the Thermoplastic Materials and Foams Division in 1994. |
